Deep Democracy

Deep Democracy is an innovative and powerful methode for leading and facilitating groups. This method is developed to be able to make decisions that are supported by everyone in the room. Deep Democracy works differently than the majority democracy principle that we normally use. In Deep Democracy the majority as well as the minority have a say in the decision-making process. This makes this method innovative and a breath of fresh air compared to the usual decision-making processes (think about your usual meetings for example).

The techniques within this model ensure that as many voices as possible are heard within the group. This leads to inclusion. The potential and wisdom of the whole group is used. And because all the expertise and knowledge of the group is pooled together, sustainable decisions are made.

When is Deep Democracy a suitable facilitation method?

The method is for everyone who wants to achieve a goal together with others.

Whether you are part of the executive board, a manager, a teacher, a consultant or a student who is leading a school project … taking decisions is usually not an automatic process. Sometimes we end up pushing through a decision based on what the majority of the group wants bringing along all kinds of frustrations or we postpone the decision until the next meeting. Recognize this?

Or if you are a trainer, manager, leader, teacher of facilitator and lead/facilitate a lot of groups. Maybe then you want to learn how you can be confident in front of a group? Do you want to be able to deal with conflict and tension in a confident way? Do you want to feel (more) comfortable in the role you take during group processes? Through learning Deep Democracy, you strengthen your facilitator skills, deepen conversations and take durable decisions.

Togetherness and transformation is created within the group. And you play a role in this!

Deep Democracy can be applied to a broad variety of contexts. The techniques are suitable for all kind of groups, from very small groups to very large ones.

Origins and applications

Deep Democracy has been developed by Myrna Lewis in South Africa at the beginning of the 90’s. It was developed the business sector during the transition from apartheid to democracy. Currently, this method is being used in more than twenty countries across the whole world and applied in a large number of sector: businesses, politics, health care, education, non-profit sector, and in the family and private sphere (therapeutic applications). Perspectivity has been trained by Yonathan Keren, who was one of the first ones to be educated in the method by Myrna Lewis. Perspecitivity facilitators apply the Deep Democracy facilitation method, also in the form of the ‘light’ version, the so-called ‘Co-Resolve’ method.
