Caucus for Children’s Rights (CCR), a youth protection agency in Tanzania, wanted their core group of facilitators to deepen knowledge and understanding of facilitation concepts and strengthen their facilitation skills.

Perspectivity designed a trajectory to enable the facilitators to increase effectiveness and impact of their multistakeholder workshops.

Approach & Activities
The facilitation trajectory consisted of 4 elements:

  1. Training
  2. Design assistance
  3. Observations
  4. Reflection, lessons learned and next steps

1. Training
The training on facilitation concepts and techniques existed of two modules of three days each:

  • Day 1 & 2 – Training: input is provided on facilitation concepts and techniques.
  • Day 3 – Application: the new knowledge and skills are applied and tried out on a group of actors, acting as participants.

Every training module took place two weeks before the Boundary Partners Workshop.

2. Design Assistance
For half a day, the consultant worked with the facilitators on designing their Boundary Partners Workshop, using new approaches learned in the training.

3. Observations
During the Boundary Partners Workshops the Perspectivity consultant was present to observe the facilitators.

4. Reflection
Two days after the Boundary Partners workshop, a whole day was reserved to reflect on the workshop, share observations, identify lessons learned, areas for improvement and identify ways to integrate these in the upcoming workshops.

The trajectory took place in the months of August, September and October 2012 and lasted 15 days in total.

Results
The approach -coaching before, during and after their own workshops- had an enormous positive effect. The participants were directly able to apply what they had learned and turned their workshops into much more dynamic and participatory events.
