East African Community (EAC)

The East African Community (EAC) is the regional intergovernmental organisation of the Republics of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Republic of Rwanda and Republic of Burundi.

The EAC Secretariat, based in Arusha in Tanzania, has the mandate to facilitate the regional integration process. The Secretariat has currently six Directorates, which work on specific areas, such as Trade, Customs, Finance, Planning and Infrastructure, Productive and Social Sectors, HR & Administration etc.

EAC Integration

German International Cooperation (GIZ) works with the EAC Secretariat through an ongoing EAC-GIZ programme to support the EAC integration process. Since 2010 Perspectivity is facilitating the development of 7-8 common annual work plans on the following areas:

  1. Organisational Development & PR
  2. Deepening regional economic integration (including Tax harmonisation, strengthening WTO TRIPS and pharmaceutical sector and strengthening economic policy competencies)
  3. Institutionalised dialogue between the private sector and civil-society organisations

Another area included in the programme is Peace and Security.
