Between 2009 and 2013 Perspectivity carried out several leadership, training and capacity development programmes for the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FSZ).

Leadership Training

In 2013 Monique Janmaat carried out a Leadership Training for the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) and its partners Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) and the Wildlife Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism in Tanzania.

The purpose of the training was to improve leadership capacity of the management of FZS and its partners in complex situations.

Monique Janmaat designed a program based on Experience: reflection – conceptualisation – and immediate application of new insights. The learning and development takes place at different levels – the person, the organization, and the system – which are included in every module. The training has two modules to cover the broad scope of the assignment.

  • Module 1: Self-Expression and Appreciative Understanding

In this module participants expressed one’s unique and pure authenticity; aiming to distinguish and excel in order to achieve something better than is available now. They developed the ability to take an appreciative understanding stance: suspending judgements and prejudice and listening openly with the aim to truly understand the other in order to discover common ground and expand it by embracing differences.

  • Module 2: Sustainable Development

The second module focussed on adopting a sustainable learning approach that guarantees its employees constant development and sharing of knowledge and expertise.

Performance Management Training and Workshop

In 2011 Monique organised and facilitated a Performance Management training and workshop for the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) and its partners in Ethiopia. FZS works for a world in which biodiversity values are recognized and maintained to ensure a high quality of life for current and future generations.

The purpose of the training was to understand the concept of performance management and to develop part of a performance management system for the participating organisations. Participants reviewed current practices and tools and adapted them, making them more user friendly. Practicing crucial skills like questioning, listening and feedback were included in the training.

The training took three days and the workshop that followed two days. As a result, FZS management developed a concept and tools for their performance management system.

Capacity Development

In 2009 and 2010 Monique worked on capacity development with the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) regional office in Africa. FZS works for a world in which biodiversity values are recognized and maintained to ensure a high quality of life for current and future generations.

In order to improve efficiency and effectiveness the FZS regional office in Serengeti asked:

  • assistance in clarifying its role within the organization
  • the outputs that is required to deliver
  • the organizational and staffing structure best able to deliver those outputs
  • the job descriptions and outputs of individual staff positions, and finally
  • the means to continually improve staff productivity (both quantitative and qualitative) through evaluation, development and leadership.

The focus was on Human Resource Management as a key management tool to be improved and developed.

Perspectivity offered a participatory and consultative approach to review HR structures, seeking consensus amongst the concerned staff about the appreciation of the current situation and the picture of a best structure and best HR policies and practices for the future. This was achieved through studying relevant documentation, (competency based) interviews and workshops.

As a result, the organization structure and the job profiles were reviewed and a capacity development plans worked out, both on the organization and individual level.
