His main ambition is to put in place the foundations of a\u00a0<em>scienza nova<\/em>\u00a0that is able to transcend the debilitating shortcomings of a worldview dominated by reductionistic Western science favouring simplicity. This\u00a0<em>complexity thinking<\/em>\u00a0will not, however, offer solutions or practical guidelines. It is a thinking \u201cwhich knows that it is always fundamentally local, situated in a given time and place, for it knows in advance that there is always uncertainty\u201d.\u202f Morin writes about the implications of his complex thinking for human affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Talking about complexity: when reading, we considered the book itself to be quite complex and challenging to read, with a high level of\u00a0academic language. Join us with the following brain-twisters to test your knowledge of complexity!<\/p>\n<p>One of the things that intrigued us is his writing on the interdependency of a pair of two concepts, or two poles of a duality\/dichotomy, and how new insights, richness and wisdom can emerge from that. Concepts such as life and non-life, autonomy and dependency, order and disorder, unity and diversity are inescapably intertwined. Complex thinking needs to try and transcend these apparent dichotomies, in order to get to real knowledge enclosed in it.\u00a0A simplistic and static \u2018holism\u2019 will not do. In order to get, we could ask ourselves the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In what way are we attached to one of the concepts of the pair? What frame of reference or what beliefs are we holding on to?<\/li>\n<li>What holds the two concepts together? What does the concept-pair exclude?<\/li>\n<li>Has the contradiction\u00a0stopped being productive or useful?<\/li>\n<li>If we allow the multiplicity of the pair of concepts, what understanding does emerge?<\/li>\n<li>If both poles are true, what new reality emerges?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the dichotomy of organising and disintegration he writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The universe began as a disintegration, and in disintegrating, it organized itself. We see how agitation and random encounters are necessary to the organisation of the universe.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On connection and distinction he writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Reality is as much in the connection (relation) as in the distinction between the open system and its environment. The environment is at the same time intimate and foreign: it is part of the system while remaining exterior to it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other quotes of Morin that we highlighted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In one way I would say that the aspiration to complexity carries in it an aspiration to completeness, because we say that everything is interdependent and everything is multidimensional. But, in another way, consciousness of complexity makes us understand that we can never escape uncertainty and we can never have total knowledge because \u2018totality is non-truth\u2019.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On complex systems:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The laws of organisation of the living are not laws of equilibrium, but rather of disequilibrium, recovered or compensated, stabilized dynamics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>About the blind intelligence of the reduction of complexity to simplicity:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hyper-specialisation tore up and fragmented the complex fabric of reality, and led to the belief that the fragmentation inflicted on reality was reality in itself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Perspectivity Enterprise recently studied and exchanged thoughts about the book\u00a0&#8216;On Complexity&#8217;\u00a0by French philosopher Edgar Morin.
