The Art of Facilitation in Complexity training

This online/hybrid training is an on-the-job learning journey in a collective and participatory learning environment. You will learn to navigate complexity and facilitate complex processes. As we are more and more often confronted with complex social challenges at local, national and global level, traditional blueprint approaches do not work anymore. We need to learn to work with emergence and navigate the many actors and factors that are constantly on the move and mutually interdependent. With this training, you will develop into a facilitator of the kind of leadership which is urgently needed in complexity. We will touch upon group dynamics, tensions, recognising what is happening in a group and how a facilitator can support groups to use the potential that is present within the group to solve its own issues.

An on-the-job learning journey in essential facilitation skills

More than ever we need the wisdom of the whole group to deal with complex challenges. We need to learn to work with emergence, and to embrace and facilitate an appropriate leadership approach.

What are the roles and meta-skills of a facilitator? How do we foster common understanding, collective ownership and joint action? How do we support groups to make sense of insights and harvests? What type of process, work forms and dialogue methods are appropriate in different situations? How do we deal with tensions?

The training is based on and inspired by various complex-sensitive methodologies and approaches, such as complexity theory, Deep Democracy, Appreciative Inquiry, Theory U, Cynefin framework. In 4 modules you will be introduced to what is needed to facilitate complex, multi-stakeholder processes and strengthen your skills through experiential exercises.

Results

The training enables you to:

  • Become aware of the complex aspects of your current challenge(s)
  • Improve facilitation skills to enable transformation
  • Gain insights in design principles for complex settings
  • Enrich your toolkit of facilitation methods useful in complexity and complex group dynamics
  • Experience and experiment with learned tools and methods in your own professional environment and peer learning group

Set-up

We offer this as an online training programme in which you can participate from anywhere in the world. The training consists of the following elements:

  • Four online group sessions during which we will introduce theory, you will participate in experiential exercises, have a chance to ask and get answers to your questions, reflect on your experiences and practice together.
  • A potential 4th live/hybrid training session in Amsterdam or London, depending on the participants.
  • Selected learning materials to read and watch in advance.
  • You will be invited to keep a journal and form peer learning groups to support your learning process, to grow as a facilitator, and to reflect on your insights and lessons throughout the training programme.

Learning principles

These key learning principles guide the design and delivery of the training:

  • Focusing on key themes: complexity and system change, dealing with tensions, dialogue and facilitation
  • Stacking: build on existing experience and knowledge
  • Being sensory rich: fun and engaging
  • Facilitating your learning flow
  • Fostering diversity and co-learning
  • Adaptive learning: practice and adapt over and over again

Modules

In four modules, we will touch upon various approaches and methods to navigate complexity, group dynamics, tensions, foster common ground and collective ownership and action, such as Deep Democracy, Theory U and complexity theory. We will work with practical cases participants bring in and organise offline peer-to-peer learning support.

We will cover the following through theory and practice:

    • Module 1 – introduction to facilitating in complexity (guiding principles and methods)
      • Kick-off and intention setting
      • Complexity and systems change – is it complicated or complex?
      • Meaningful participation
      • Rooms of change
  • Module 2 – Process design, resistance and dialogue
      • Process design in complexity
      • Levels of listening
      • Introduction to resistance line/levels
      • Dialogue exercise
  • Module 3 – Meta skills
      • Meta skills: neutrality, super listening, compassion
      • Mirroring the system and archetypes
      • Self-management
  • Module 4 – Group dynamics and iterative approach
    • Dealing with group dynamics and polarisation
    • Case clinics for practical reflection on real case studies
    • Reflection on learning journey

Peer learning groups are invited to meet and support each other in between sessions.

Module content is indicative and will be refined closer to date and based on participants’ needs.

This training is provided by senior trainer(s) with more than 15 years of experience in complexity and training.
